OVERVIEW

“None of us, including me, ever do great things. But we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful.” — Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Catholic nun and saint

It can be easy to become overwhelmed by the current state of our society and planet, but we derive hope in the power of dedicated individuals, organizations, businesses, artists, policymakers, hard-working people around the globe. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has,” as Margaret Mead said so eloquently. Stories of innovative, inspirational solutions rarely make it to mainstream media, yet happen everywhere from large cities to rural towns to mountain top villages to distant islands.

Extraordinary humans across geography, age, race, ethnicity, religion, gender and identity are coming together to meet pressing local and global challenges with passion, intention and skill. Culturally-relevant, economically-viable, scientifically-sound collaborative solutions provide us with opportunities to create and sustain a just, resilient earth.

While it may feel like you are the only one fighting for positive change in a broken, corrupt and unjust world, this is far from the truth! People on your campus, in your community and on the other side of the planet care deeply about ensuring a livable future and ethical society. Find them! Together, we can initiate, lead and achieve tangible, meaningful change.

YOU are a key part of the solution. Know that your voice and your actions are enormously powerful. By consciously assembling a team for your climate action project, you will be able to harness and leverage unique abilities for lasting impact.

But where to begin? Throughout PGC, you have realized, lived and experienced the power of one a practice we can now easily translate to the power of many.

Collaboration is at the root of success and prompts great breakthroughs. Studies show that groups innovate faster and discover better solutions, that teams achieve stronger results and report higher satisfaction.

Today, we want you to build upon the climate action project idea you developed and coalesce a group of individuals — with the right meld of minds, majors and mastery — to bring it to life. Let’s get to it!

CHALLENGE

THINK

A strong team is key to achieving success, bringing in valuable new perspectives that provide an opportunity to look at the big picture. Working together utilizes the knowledge, experience and skill sets of the entire group for best possible outcomes.

CHALLENGE

Start to consider the factors of a thriving team. What specific skills might be important for your climate action project, whether from fellow students, faculty, staff or community leaders? Who would be on your dream team? Write out names, affiliations and brief summary of assets you believe they would bring to the initiative. Think BIG!

Why does “teamwork make the dreamwork” from your perspective? Post a compelling answer or original anecdote about teamwork on Instagram, tagging @TurningGreenOrg and #PGC2020.

Greener

40 POINTS

Greener due on October 29 @ 6am PT.

THINK

Working together, we can achieve so much — far more than we could ever do alone! Think about how far you have come in life with the help, support and contributions of others. With this in mind, it is time to assemble your team.

CHALLENGE

Determine the individuals you will ask to join. Each team should have four to five members, including at least one faculty or staff in an advisory role. We recommend adding a community leader or outside expert as well. Include people with diverse backgrounds, majors, passions, skills and knowledge!

Draft a message you will send to each prospective teammate to ask them to join, including:

  • Basic overview of your climate action project with rough timeline and goals
  • Why you think they would be a valuable asset
  • Level of commitment needed from each member

Send the messages to solidify commitments. Show us your process with a team photo collage, screenshots, and any other materials you use for outreach and assembly of your team.
